Is this the end of Oare Village Hall?

After many decades of existence Oare Village Hall is now at serious risk of closure. Can you help?

The main reasons that the future of the Hall is at risk are:

The Village Hall Committee no longer has enough members to be workable, with the imminent resignations of the current Chair, Treasurer and Secretary, following many years of service.
The Hall is no longer financially viable , due to the decline in rental income from hirers in recent years, and the fact that we no longer make enough money from the events we put on.

To ensure that the Hall can continue, the immediate priority is to get the Committee up to full strength again, including filling the Officer positions of Chair, Treasurer and Secretary.

What the Committee does

The role of the Committee is two-fold:

1. To oversee the upkeep and functioning of the Hall, including managing finances, bookings and hirers; and

2. To put on events which help to fund the running of the Hall.

Without the Committee, the Hall will cease to be.

So we are urgently looking for volunteers from the local community to join the Committee, to ensure that there are sufficient members to properly carry out all its roles and responsibilities ( see here for more details ) especially those of the Officers.

The bottom line is that, sadly, if there are not enough new volunteers then the current Committee, as the trustees, will need to explore all options for the future of the Hall, most likely selling the land and winding up the Charity.

Support Oare School – and the environment – with Bag2School

Are you having a clear out and need to get rid of old clothes, shoes and bags etc?

Oare School PTA has organised a clothes and shoe collection with Bag2School in order to raise funds for a much-needed new dishwasher for the school.

Bag2School is the UK’s leading textile recycler and fundraiser working with schools and since its inception in 1999 it has now paid out over £48 million.

As well as raising vitally needed funds for our school it also helps the environment by helping to divert unwanted textiles away from landfill. A recent DEFRA report has shown that textile collection schemes are helping to reduce the volume of textiles discarded as municipal solid waste. However it is a fact that as a nation we still send 350,000 tonnes of textiles to landfill every year.

By getting involved in our Bag2School collection, you have an opportunity to sort through your cupboards and wardrobes and donate unwanted textiles in the bag provided – this can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), hats, belts, handbags and soft toys, (please refer to https://bag2school.com for full details).

You can use any bag to donate your items.

Bag2School will be collecting from Oare Primary School on Friday 15 May . Please bring your bag (or bags!) to the main entrance of the school before 9am on the Friday morning and help us have a really good collection.

If you need to drop them off before Friday 15th, you can leave them with the Hurd’s at The Stables, Pound Lane, before then.

On Saturday 13th June 2025, participants from Wiltshire and beyond will be taking on the Wiltshire 3 Peaks Challenge! Youth Adventure Trust is giving participants the option of walking, running or jogging either 10km or a Half Marathon to raise funds for local young people.

The Wiltshire 3 Peaks Challenge will be a fantastic opportunity to support vulnerable young lives, as well as take in the glorious scenery of Wiltshire and enjoy a fun and rewarding experience with your friends, family or colleagues.

Church Notice: Oare & Huish church electoral roll

Application forms now available; closing date 29th April 2025

Notice is given that under the Church Representation Rules a new Church Electoral Roll has to be prepared every six years. This year, every person who wishes to have his or her name entered on the new Roll, whether they are on the present Roll or not, is requested to apply for enrolment not later than 29th April 2025.

What being on the Church Electoral Roll means

A resident of the parish who is a member of the Church of England needs be on the Electoral Roll if they wish to vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) for the election of Churchwardens, Deanery Synod representatives and Parochial Church Council (PCC) officers of their parish church.

Likewise, a person who is a non-resident of the parish who is a member of the Church of England and has attended the church on a regular basis within the last six months, must also be on the Roll in order to be able to vote for the election of the officers as described above.

Also, a non-resident of the parish needs to be on the Electoral Roll if they wish to be buried in the churchyard of the church which they regularly attend.

The above also applies to both resident and non-residents of the parish who are non-members of the Church of England, but whose churches are in communion with the Church of England (eg Roman Catholics, Methodists, Baptists etc).

How to apply to be on the Roll

Application forms can be obtained from Diane Strong ( dianemstrong@aol.com ) or Richard Marsh ( marsh315@btinternet.com ).

Application forms are also be available from both St Nicholas, Huish and Holy Trinity, Oare, and can be found on the font in either church.

Application forms must be returned to Diane or Richard by 29th April 2025.

Extra Wiltshire Connect stop outside Holy Trinity Church

Wiltshire Connect has announced an additional bus stop location for Oare, outside Holy Trinity Church. The new stop now appears on the Wilts Connect app when you go to book your travel and serves buses going towards Marlborough, Pewsey, Devizes and other dedtinations.

This stop is in addition to the existing Wiltshire Connect stops at Oare School and in Huish, and should provide easier, safer access to these bus services for people living near the church, rather than having to walk along the main road to the X5 bus stop.

Wiltshire Connect is the on-demand and timetabled bus network in the Pewsey Vale and Marlborough area. The Annual Remembrance Sunday Service for the parishes of Huish with Oare will take place at Holy Trinity Church, Oare, on Sunday 10th November.

At this service we remember the dead from the two World Wars and the names of the fallen from both parishes will be read out and the Last Post and Reveille will be sounded.

Sir Henry Keswick has kindly allowed those attending the service to park on the driveway to Oare House - please park on the right-hand side of the drive only.

The service begins at 10.50am and everyone is welcome.

Tackling speeding through Oare - can you help?

Oare is now recognised by the police as one of the worst villages in Wiltshire for speeding.

Since we have very little pavement most of us are forced to walk much of the length of the village on the road. Sadly, this makes the journey to and from the village hall, church, school and bus stop, as well as each other’s houses, much more dangerous than it need be - and means our community is fragmented.

We have periodic visits from the Special Constabulary Roads Policing Unit who have sophisticated cameras and enforcement powers to fine speeders, summons them to Court or send them on a Driver Awareness course. In addition, your Parish Council has been working with Wiltshire Highways on possible new ways of tackling speeding in our village. But we can only make the case for change if we have the necessary supporting data.

And that’s where Oare Community Speed Watch plays a vital role.

What is Speed Watch?

Oare Community Speed Watch (CSW), run by volunteers, supports these officers from the Roads Policing Unit. Our primary role is to make drivers aware of the speed limit in the village by our presence and to report those who do speed to the Wiltshire Community Speed Watch team. They in turn write letters to all those reported as speeding, reminding them of why speeding is not acceptable. Repeat offenders can be required to attend a Community Speed Awareness Course.

Oare CSW exists because we have a 30mph speed limit. We report anyone who is doing 36 miles per hour or greater - and we have recorded some doing as much as 60 miles an hour!

Volunteers needed

Oare CSW did originally have quite a few volunteers but as the years have passed our numbers have dwindled - and we need more people to keep Oare CSW viable.

So if you have serious concerns about speeding in Oare then by joining Speed Watch you are helping your community by educating drivers and reduce speeding instances – and it’s just a few hours a month of your time.

What’s involved?

All volunteers are trained to operate at risk-assessed sites and must comply with CSW procedures. The training is in two parts:

an online course with questions to be completed
a training session at a risk-assessed site in how to use the camera, how to record speeders and your safety

As team leader, I look after the speed camera, co-ordinate sessions and report speeders using a simple spreadsheet system. All our sessions are run during daylight hours and in good visibility. We have high-visibility jackets and lanyards to identify ourselves, provided by CSW.

Our sessions are typically one hour long, but they can be shorter. We always work in a team of at least two and sometimes three. We operate on any day of the week, up to 8pm in the summer and to about 4pm in the winter - so if you can only do weekends in the winter, you could still make some sessions. All sessions are run at times convenient to our volunteers!

Jubilee and beyond? – You decide

This June sees the celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

This June sees the celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In the past, this kind of national celebration and long holiday weekend is the type of occasion that we have celebrated in some way as a community.

But there’s a problem.

The current Village Hall Committee is too small to plan and run the type of events you might want to attend. The Committee has dwindled to very small group who are determined to keep things running. But we are limited in what we can actually do on our own. The Hall has been barely used since the start of the pandemic, with very few events or regular bookings.

There are lots of events that COULD happen over the Jubilee weekend. Some kind of street party or village picnic? A beacon on the hill? Dressing up in Fifties clothes; and so on.

We need your help

But if you want to enjoy community events for the Jubilee (and beyond), it will need more members of our community to step up and help to organise and run them. We need YOU – or nothing will happen.

We do need new members of the Committee, but even if you can just volunteer to assist with the running of an event, that would be an enormous help.

Come along to one of our two meetings at the Village Hall:

Bags2School collection from the school on 30th November

The Eco-Council of Oare Primary School have organised a Bags2School collection on 30th November.

Bags2School is a fundraising scheme, established in 1999, for anyone wanting to raise funds using a resource EVERYONE has got in their wardrobe – unwanted clothes.

Bags may be dropped at the School from Monday 29th November but no later than 9am on Tuesday 30th November.

This is not only a great fund-raising opportunity for Oare School, but also a valuable support for the circular economy. All goods donated will be re-used.

The Oare Eco-Council would also like to remind everyone that the school collects used batteries, old prescription spectacles and pens/felt tips/highlighters/dry wipe board markers (any brand). The Eco-Council is working on adding more items to our collection point soon.

Please note this recycling facility is not just for school families, but is open to the entire community of Oare and the surrounding area.

Hall reopening 17th May 2021 | Read about our Covid-19 measures

Oare Village Hall is reopening for hires from 17th May 2021.

To enable us to do this, we will be following the current UK Government guidelines on Coronavirus. Our objective is to make sure the Hall is "Covid-19 Secure” for all of our users.

In order to achieve this we will be updating our Hire Agreement to meet these requirements - see our Special Conditions of Hire during the Covid-19 Pandemic . We will also be asking potential hirers to complete a Risk Assessment for their event. A template for these is available on request.

We have also defined our approach to keeping the Hall Covid19-safe and have completed our own Risk Assessment for the Hall .

Pewsey Vale School Covid-19 Shelter Appeal

The Pewsey Vale School Parent Teacher and Friends Association (PTFA) has launched an exciting new campaign to raise funds to install a permanent covered outdoor seating area at Pewsey Vale School.

The canopy will provide a further separate area at the School which, in the short term, will be used in keeping student bubbles separate during breaks from lessons and, in the longer term, will be used for dining, socialising, relaxing and learning as needed.

Costing in the region of £16,000, the PTFA can already contribute £8,000 towards the canopy. They believe that working with the school community and wider local community, a further £8,000 can be raised to make the covered outdoor space a reality, providing real benefit to current and future pupils at the school.

The PTFA are asking for pledges to donate and offering incentives for donations. If you are an ex-pupil, a local resident or business and would like to support the PTFA, a registered charity, in providing this infrastructure for this Pewsey Vale School please visit their crowdfunding page for more details.

Volunteers needed to listen to children read in local schools

Schoolreaders.org is looking for Wiltshire volunteers to listen to children read in local primary schools after lockdown

Schoolreaders, established in 2013, is a nationwide charity which finds volunteers and places them in primary schools where they give free one-to-one reading sessions.

Says Serena Whitbread, Schoolreaders' Wiltshire Ambassador, "Reading volunteers are going to be desperately needed following the Coronavirus pandemic. Thousands of children won’t have had enough reading practice during lockdown."

In a normal year, one in four children leave primary school unable to read well. Most children will have missed a term of school, so the reading gap is now even wider. Children who struggle with reading are more likely to live in poverty and be unemployed as adults.

Schoolreaders needs more volunteers in Wiltshire to support children’s reading and prevent them falling further behind. "You can make a difference to a child’s life by applying to become a Schoolreader. No qualifications are needed - just a love of reading and some spare time each week," Serena adds.

News about this year’s Remembrance Service

This year’s Remembrance Service will be held on Wilcot village green.

At the recent Huish with Oare PCC meeting the decision was made not to hold the Remembrance Service in Oare Church this year.

Instead it was agreed it would make more sense under the current circumstances to have the service outside at Wilcot War Memorial, situated by the village green. This will mean more space for people to social distance themselves.

The short 20 minute service will be at 10.45 am on Sunday 8th November.

Attendees are advised to familiarise themselves with this advice from the government beforehand:

Who can attend a Remembrance Sunday event?

Event organisers should keep numbers of those participating in the event to a minimum. For the avoidance of doubt, the following people are legally permitted to attend events to commemorate Remembrance Sunday as participants. Attendees should observe social distancing at all times. Attendees should also take advantage of opportunities for wreath layers to represent wider groups.

- people attending as part of their work (such as local councillors, local faith leaders, the local MP)

- people attending in a voluntary capacity on behalf of a recognised organisation

- members of the armed forces

- veterans of the armed forces, and/or their representatives or carers

Members of the public are legally permitted to stop and watch the event as spectators, but event organisers should take reasonable steps to discourage the public from attending events, and be mindful of the risk that such events pose, especially to veterans who are often elderly.

Where members of the public do attend, they must only attend the event with their own household or those in their support bubble, or one other person (children under school age, as well as those dependent on round-the-clock care, such as those with severe disabilities, who are with their parents will not count towards the limit on 2 people meeting outside) and observe social distancing rules.

Event organisers should review the updated guidance on the clinically extremely vulnerable , and ensure this is taken into account when planning events.

Virtual Village Show: Winners!

It's that time of year again for you to show what you have been growing in your gardens and baking in your kitchens.

This year the Village Show is moving online, using photos of your entries. Because this is a bit unusual, we won’t be presenting cups this year - but our judges will be looking for the top entries in each class and awarding certifcates instead.

How to enter

Simply take a photo of your entry (or entries) and email it to oare2020@sparklingit.com before 30th August .

Don't forget to include your name and, if entering the children's classes, your child's age. Please also label your photos with the correct class - see below a list of the class categories.

The Judges will award a First, Second and Third prize for each class. The Judges’ decision is final.
No cups will be presented this year, but certificates will be awarded for all placed entries.

No more than three entries/photos can be entered per class per garden.

Entries will only be accepted up to midnight on 30th August.

Important update: prescriptions dispensed by Boots in Pewsey - 10/04/20

Important information for those whose prescriptions are dispensed by Boots in Pewsey

One of the most important issues under the current lockdown is prescriptions - here is an update.

For the first week of lockdown, the Pewsey Community volunteer group (PCCA) were taking calls for prescriptions, managing the queue, and delivering hundreds of prescriptions. For technical and legal reasons, that situation could not continue and Boots plc have now taken control.

The important points are:

Deliveries

Anybody needing delivery of prescription medicines (the vulnerable/over 70/isolating) needs to be registered with Boots . The only telephone number to use is 01672 563488 - keep trying, you will eventually get through. Boots deliver on Tuesdays and Thursdays and only to people already registered for their delivery service. Note: anyone who previously had medication delivered by the PCCA should have been added to this Boots register.

For collections (all others, including households where not all members are isolating) Boots now has a staff of six and the queues are a more reasonable 15-20 minutes. Unless you are already registered for text alerts, the only way to know if prescriptions are ready is to phone the Boots number. Boots is open 10-1 and 2-5 Monday to Friday (closes at 4:30 on Saturday).

IMPORTANT - Registration with the NHS for automatic repeat prescriptions does not mean you are registered for the Boots delivery service , which is a completely separate thing. For auto-repeat prescriptions (i.e. the pharmacy processes it without being asked) there no need to re-order – the previous system continues. If the recipient previously had to reorder when required, then the surgery must be notified by you as before, either by dropping off a paper prescription, by ringing the surgery, or by ordering online.

The system seems to be working well now, but we and the central PCCA will of course try to help anyone that runs into problems. It would also be very useful to have your feedback on how the system is running, whether positive or negative, so that we can pass this on and help with improvements.

Coronavirus support for Oare and surrounding area - can we help?

Whether or not you are self-isolating, you may feel vulnerable to COVID-19 – we are here to help.

We are setting up local teams covering small areas (Upper, Middle and Lower Oare; Sunnyhill; plus others as necessary).

We can help with:

Shopping for food and essential supplies – delivered to your front door or porch.
Pharmacy collections – as above, and we will need a signed permission letter.
General support – someone to talk to on the phone so that nobody feels alone through this difficult time.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide any transport services, medical advice or support, or physical care.

This is an entirely voluntary project being organised by Oare Village Hall Committee and is free to all. You may not want or need help at this stage, but do contact us in future if things change.

Oare Village Hall Open Day - Saturday 16th March

The newly refurbished Oare Village Hall is holding a community open day on Saturday 16th March.

The Hall will be open between 10am and 2pm and you are invited to come for tea, coffee and cake and see for yourself the wonderful new kitchen and catering facilities, alongside other recent enhancements. The inside and outside of the Hall have also been repainted and the roofing repaired.

All the work has been funded through a combination of grants, donations and the kind generosity of local residents.

Perfect for parties, meetings, exercise classes and other social functions, Oare Village Hall is also used by the local Mothers and Toddlers group and is our parish polling station at election time. We are keen to attract new users to this flexible and welcoming venue.

Come along and see what the Hall has to offer and learn more about our plans for further improvements and future events. Complimentary tea, coffee and cakes will be served and there will be a free raffle - with the winner receiving a free half-day hire of the Hall (worth £60).

New Yoga classes in Oare Village Hall
